An
easy way to immediately improve your putting, is to build
your confidence by becoming a "Master" in stages.
Become a "Master" of the short putts and you'll
start rolling longer putts with the confidence it takes
to get the ball to the hole or just past it!
Good
things will start to happen when you get the ball to the
hole!
The
Drill;
Take
four balls and start at 18 inches. Yes, that's one and a
half feet! Become an "Master"!
Line each one up as if it's to win the US Open.
Keep
your body as rock solid as possible. Nothing moves except
your arms, hands and club. Not your head, not even your
eyes! After making a few, start lining them up and
then close your eyes and make 8 in a row. By closing your
eyes you will learn to feel and trust your stroke.
After you've mastered "the short putt", move back
to thirty inches and repeat the drill. Again, become an
"Expert" at that distance! If
you miss one, move back to "the short putt" and
make another 8 in a row and repeat the drill again at thirty
inches.
Now
move back to 4'. Starting at this distance, allow yourself
to miss one or two out of the eight putts, but any miss MUST be past the hole! Leave nothing short! Leave one short
and back you go... to the previous spot and re-master it.
Continue
by moving back to 6', 10', 15', 20', 30'. Again, line them
up and close your eyes before hitting the putt. Learn to
feel and you'll learn to trust. Learn to trust and you'll
find yourself one-putting more greens. The dreaded "three
putt" will virtually become extinct.
Once
you get past the 30' mark, picture a 6 foot circle around
the hole and put all 8 putts inside the circle. Repeat this
at 40', 50' and 60' and even more if your back can take
it (do stretching exercises and/or take short breaks). If
they are all inside the 6 foot circle, (3' in any direction
from the hole) you have just eliminated the dreaded three-putt,
because by now you are a Master of the short putt!

Sez Woody... Repeat this drill often.
And before each round, make the last stop of warm up
(just before teeing off) the "putting green"...
give yourself 10 to 20 minutes of putting to get a
good feel for the speed of the greens, as they can
change daily. Every Pro on tour makes this a daily
routine, shouldn't you? Please don't give me
the "lame" excuse of not having enough time! The time you save on the course making fewer putts
will more than equal the time spent getting a feel
for the greens!
